About Apple Valley:

Apple Valley is a town located in the Victor Valley of San Bernardino County, California, incorporated on November 14, 1988. As of the 2005 census, the town has a total population of 70,000. As of 2005 the California Department of Finance estimates the population to be 63,853. The town is 10 miles east of neighboring Victorville, 37 miles south of Barstow and 46 miles north of San Bernardino through the Cajon Pass.

Apple Valley is governed by a town council, whose mayor as of 2005 is Scott Nassif.

The city of Apple Valley, Minnesota is named for Apple Valley, California.

Apple Valley was home to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, whose museum was first established in Apple Valley (in 1967) before the museum was relocated to Victorville in 1976. Since 2003 the museum has been located in Branson, Missouri.

Apple Valley Geography:

Apple Valley is located at 34°30'41" North, 117°12'43" West (34.511486, -117.212010).

Apple Valley is located at the southern edge of the Mojave Desert. It is bordered by Victorville on the west and Hesperia on the south sides. The primary thoroughfare through Apple Valley is California State Route 18, which is known locally as the "Happy Trails Highway," named after the theme song of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 190.7 km2 (73.6 mi2). 189.9 km2 (73.3 mi2) of it is land and 0.8 km2 (0.3 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

Apple Valley Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 54,239 people, 18,557 households, and 14,363 families residing in the town. The population density is 285.6/km2 (739.6/mi2). There are 20,163 housing units at an average density of 106.2/km2 (275.0/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 76.42% White, 7.89% African American, 0.98% Native American, 2.21% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 7.92% from other races, and 4.36% from two or more races. 18.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,557 households out of which 38.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% are non-families. 18.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,421, and the median income for a family is $45,070. Males have a median income of $41,144 versus $30,249 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,830. 17.3% of the population and 13.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
